Building upon a series of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy workshops co-developed over the past decade by Dr. Pat Ogden & Dr. Bonnie Goldstein which weave in elements of Interpersonal Neurobiology & Attachment Theory, the aim of this workshop is to help mental health practitioners, parents and caregivers:

  • augment the ability to manage stress
  • regulate autonomic arousal to avoid overwhelm or numbing
  • stay present with partners in the midst of conflict
  • understand the interwoven relationship between emotional, social, cognitive, and biological influences that impact our families

This workshop will elucidate ways to understand the “somatic narrative” when treating escalating therapeutic challenges such as anxiety, anger, confusion, helplessness and hopelessness.

Through the lens of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, we will discuss ways to:

  • foster insight and awareness
  • cultivate resilience and self-compassion
  • mobilize action
  • offer stabilizing developmental movements
    • (for example, develop Yield as a resource)

emphasizing the relational components and psychological implications accessed through physical movement.

Since no family is alike, nor any parent-child relationship, Dr. Goldstein will explore a range of parenting/caregiving issues, illuminating practical treatment approaches that can increase our effectiveness with complex family dynamics and support small and large shifts in everyday life which can enhance well-being.

Practical body-oriented interventions, brief clinical vignettes and short embedded relational mindfulness™ exercises will be introduced as we revisit the role of parents/caregivers in our ever-evolving family systems and our changing and unpredictable world.

Inspired by the voices and stories from the multimedia report put out by The New York Times, "The Primal Scream," the aim of this workshop is to help mental health practitioners, parents and caregivers  augment the ability to manage stress in these challenging times and cultivate resilience and wellbeing.
